It's For My Own Safety, Sir

Iain Dale, in his diary in the Independent on Sunday, tells of his experience at

. . . ITN last week when I was told by their security guard to seach my own bag, as due to health and safety legislation he wasn't allowed to put his hand in the bag himself.

And at Philadelphia airport a couple of weeks ago I was asked by the TSA inspector about to search my bag: "Is there anything in here which might harm me?" The question, of course, would instantly disarm the most hardened of terrorists.
